Just two hours south of Yerevan, Vayots Dzor is home to busy wineries and stunning vineyards that continue Armenia’s long tradition of winemaking. At the heart of the Vayots Dzor wine region is the Areni-1 Cave, site of the oldest known winery. From the findings at this site, we know that Armenian wines have been gracing Armenian tables for at least 6000 years. Today, Vayots Dzor is home to many contemporary winemakers. Local museums, such as the Yeghegnadzor Regional Museum, provide additional information about the region’s archaeology and history of winemaking.
