Pottery is one of the oldest Armenian traditions, dating back to vessels for storing food and drink in the third millenium BCE. Inspired by the ancient Ukhtasar Petroglyphs in the nearby mountains of southern Armenia, painter and pottery master Vahagn Hambardzumyan and his wife, the artist Zara Gasparyan, founded Sisian Ceramics in 2004. Together, they study the roots of Armenian ceramics, ancient technologies, and decorative art forms while sharing their knowledge and skill in ceramic traditions.
Visitors can throw clay mugs on the potter's wheel under the expert guidance of Vahagn. Another experiences offered by Vahagn and Zara is about designing a batik scarf. Afterwards, visitors can enjoy refreshments on the balcony, and take home their creations as souvenirs. In addition, many works of art at the studio are available for purchase.
